Enhancing the Safeguarding of children and staff

Havely Hey Community School, a two-form entry primary school with 500 pupils, was in need of a new Reception Area to enhance the Safeguarding of children at the school. Concept Group was chosen to undertake the internal refurbishment of the Reception Area to form a secure lobby.

The project involved the creation of a secure area at the main entrance of the school, to include the provision of a new meeting room. The works included the stripping out of the existing area and preparatory works such as the removal of partitions, screen doors and floor coverings.

Careful planning and design enabled existing equipment to be re-used

A key part of the project was the adaptation of the existing reception desk along with the installation of new partitions and a reception hatch. The new hatch and counter tops had to be formed from a hardwood type to match the existing reception furniture, which was to be re-used, but with the addition of glazed doors, windows and parcel slots. Replacement of the ground floor carpet to the whole atrium was also undertaken.

Further works were carried out to design, install, test, commission and implement the complete mechanical and electrical installation for the lobby, reception and meeting rooms. Existing electrical, lighting and alarm systems had to be stripped out whilst retaining services to the rest of the school.

Crucial to the security of the new Reception was the introduction of access control systems to the doors, connecting into the school’s existing access systems. Concept also supplied and installed a complete hearing induction loop system to the hatch, to enable those with hearing disabilities to communicate more easily with staff at the school.
